Free"trial"dom

April 17, 2007 / by richpurvis

Having spent the last 6 months launching vertical websites I've noticed one very frustrating thing about advertising agencies. The market place demands free trials which is fair, with so much S%&t out there recruiters and good websites need this tool to assess whether it is worth while investment.
Rec cons use, and abuse, free trails all the time and have built up impressive knowledge of the market place against real results, even a resourcer will have a good feel for where the good candidates are coming from.
This allows them to use all sorts of un-crowded media, generate exclusive traffic and keep themselves in the pockets of companies across the UK.
However AA's are not willing to use this tool as a way to assess the market place themselves and rely on stats and "tracking" systems from paid campaigns, surely a much slower and less accurate way of judging the market.

This has have a number of effects in the market:
1) It forces publishers to go direct - you all know what happens then
2) It creates a "no one gets fired for recommending totaljobs" mentality
3) It stagnates the market
4) Pushes prices up (hmmm!)
5) MAKES MY LIFE HARDER
